Terengganu is one of the three east coast states on Peninsular Malaysia with a land area of 12,995 sq km and 225 km of picturesque coastline.

State Capital

Kuala Terengganu, its capital and royal town, is situated on the banks of Terengganu River.

Population

Terengganu has a population of approximately 927,000 consisting of 95% Malays and the rest comprising Chinese, Indian and other communities.

Working Week

Most offices begin the working week on Saturday and the weekend holiday fall on Thursday and Friday. Banks close on Fridays, public holidays and every first and third Saturday of the month.

Climate

A sunny, tropical climate all year round with an annual temperature of 26C—33C. The islands on the East Coast experience occasional torrential showers between November to February. However, som established resorts continue to operate during this season.

Language

The official language is Bahasa Malaysia. However, English is widely spoken.

Currency

The unit of currency is the Malaysian Ringgit denoted as RM. Visitors need to be aware that traveler’s cheques cannot be exchanged on some islands and a number of resorts do not accept credit cards. It is adviseable to make prior financial arrangement on the mainland.

Time Difference

Eight hours ahead of GMT and 16 hours ahead of U.S Pacific Standard Time.

Electricity

Voltage is 220-240 volts A/C at 50 cycles per second.

Credit Cards

All major international credit cards such as Visa, MasterCard and American Express are widely accepted.
